31st March 2022

Our National Women’s Coach Jeremy Huntley and our National Men’s Coach Jonathan Sewell are pleased to announce our team for the forthcoming FIPJP World Championships of Singles, Doubles and Mixed Doubles to be held in Karlslunde, Denmark between 12th to 15th May 2022.

Alex Spillett and Sofiane Lachani will play Singles in their respective gender categories while Callum and Karen Lombard will play the Mixed Doubles.

The programme shown on the tournament website indicates that there will be four rounds of Swiss System qualification with the various formats being played consecutively. The knockout will follow from that.

For Alex and and Callum, this will be their first representational opportunities at Senior level following previous representation at Espoirs level. Sofiane is one of our country’s most experienced international players and he holds the joint record for the most English National Singles Titles, including his most recent win in 2020. For Karen, it’s a return to international representation after playing in the Women’s World Championships in 1992.

The COVID pandemic has resulted in an unusual situation in that both the World and European Singles, Doubles and Mixed Doubles are taking place in the same year. A further announcement will be made on the selection for the European Championships in Holland in July.

For English pétanque supporters wishing to travel to this tournament and back our team, Karlslunde is easily accessible by public transport from Copenhagen Airport. The tournament website contains details of how to get tickets and also gives travel advice.
