West Hereford Petanque Club have commenced an initiative introducing our sport to a group of Cub Scouts and Beavers. Yesterday saw the 1st of 3 Petanque Coaching sessions for the 1st Hereford YMCA Scout Group.
Firstly some thanks. Melanie for her brilliant leadership in planning and organising the event. Kirstie for seeing the possibilities and organising her “Pack”, Chris for providing the medallions and certificates and all WHPC’s helpers who made the terrain and clubhouse look good and then took responsibility for coaching the Scouts in particular skills.
We had 2 x groups yesterday – consisting of 15 Cub Scouts (a mixture of 8 to 10.5 year old.) each having about a 1.5 hour session. Each session comprising of a showing of part of the PE Training Video, pointing, shooting, tactical and health & safety modules. Our next session on Monday 24th June will consist of a Beavers group and a Cub Scouts group. The Cub Scouts were attentive, enthusiastic and motivated.
It is now up to all of us to build on this success with more groups and “do our best” to engage these youngsters in Petanque by providing further playing and coaching opportunities in the coming months.
Scout Leader commented:
Thank you so much the session was well planned and executed.
Petanque Junior Lead Chris Chubb commented:
Some ideas here for Clubs around the country to pinch. Why not try to replicate this club’s hard work which we hope will lead to more juniors playing petanque. I am sure Peter will not mind fielding a phone call or two – or you could call me.
Thank you to Peter Clarke (Chair, WHPC) for sending in what is happening at their club to help build the future of petanque. If your club is doing anything to help introduce new juniors to the sport or if you have juniors in your club doing great things please send your stories to Chris Chubb at juniors@petanque-england.uk so we can share it with everyone.
