Umpires in Petanque

Umpires are central to every pétanque competition, ensuring matches are played fairly, consistently, and in accordance with the rules. Their presence helps uphold both the integrity of the game and the spirit in which it is played.

Although umpiring can be demanding, it offers a rewarding pathway for those who are passionate about pétanque, have a strong grasp of the rules, and are confident in making fair, impartial decisions.

If you’re interested in becoming an Umpire, you’ll need to have been a member of Petanque England for at least two years. You can then apply for the Club Umpire course using the application form below. With two years’ experience at club level, you may progress to County Umpire, and after a further two years, to National Umpire.

Petanque England also supports the development of European and International Umpires, preparing candidates for examinations set by the CEP and FIPJP.

The CEP website, cep-petanque.com provides a range of resources, including official rules, guidance, and umpiring materials.

All qualified umpires are required to maintain their membership with Petanque England and attend a refresher or upgrade course at least once every two years.

To apply for an umpiring course or refresher exam, please contact our Umpiring Commission: umpring@petanque-england.uk.
