Junior National Teams

Our Juniors compete in international competitions at World level (organised by FIPJP) and at European level (organised by CEP).

Criteria for selection 2026

  • Assessment of ability and attitude of play during triple games Players will be assessed during triple games as part of their junior team. A coach will observe the game and complete a tracking form to evaluate performance. The focus will be on the effectiveness of each player's boule and their consistency throughout the match. To ensure a fair and thorough review, each player must be assessed at least three times before June 2026.
  • Assessment of skills and game play during 3 squad days Players will be assessed during the squad days, their ability to listen and adapt their technique to improve their game. The skills assessed during these day will vary.
  • Communication with teammates and coach Many juniors have limited experience playing in competitive high level triples games, which has been noticeable during recent international competitions. Additionally, using a coach effectively during matches is an area where support is often needed. Fortunately, we have a few coaches who are keen to help. When juniors organise themselves into a triples team, we will do our best to attend and support them during competitions.
  • Experience of competitions, with Junior teammates – outside of regional events. Please keep us updated on any junior team appearances, especially triple events. It’s important for players to gain experience on a variety of terrains. Setting goals for each competition—and showing determination to achieve them—is a key part of their development.

How have we done?

2025

In 2025, Pétanque England sent two doubles teams to the World Youth Championships in Spain. Team England 1, comprising Amy Geddes and Matthew Butcher, and Team England 2, featuring Aimee Rickman and Alex Warren, finished a respectable 27th and 37th respectively from a strong field of 58 teams. All four players also competed together in the Triples competition held the same weekend. They achieved an impressive 17th place out of 28 teams, underlining the growing strength of England’s youth development pathway.

2024

In 2024, Pétanque England sent two teams to compete at the CEP Junior Championship in Spain, giving many young players their first experience of an international tournament. The junior male team - Alex Moriarty, Matthew Butcher, Charlie Woodward and Alex Warren - delivered an outstanding performance to secure a podium finish. The junior female team - Ayva Law, Tegan Finley, Amy Geddes and Amy Rickman - also competed strongly and narrowly missed out on the podium. The event marked a significant step forward in the development of England’s next generation of players.
