What Is Pétanque?

Pétanque is a traditional French game that belongs to the family of boules sports. It’s a social, inclusive, and skilful game that’s easy to learn but challenging to master. Here’s the breakdown:

The Basics:

Players take turns throwing steel balls (called boules) as close as possible to a small wooden target ball, known as the jack or cochonnet (French for "little piglet"). It can be played one-on-one (singles), in pairs (doubles), or in teams of three (triples). The game is usually played on a gravel or sandy surface called a piste or terrain. The first team to score 13 points wins the game.

A Game of Strategy and Precision:

It’s not just about tossing boules; players must strategise to outscore their opponents by either placing their boules closer to the jack (pointing) or knocking opponents' boules away (shooting). The balance of attack and defence adds depth to the game.
